NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk Sheriff's Office (NSO) is warning the public of a jury duty scam going around.

They say that a scam involving someone impersonating a person from the Norfolk Sheriff's Office will call an individual claiming that they missed jury duty and must pay a fine or face getting arrested. The NSO said that this crime is on the rise.

They remind citizens that the NSO will never call asking for money or correspondence regarding jury duty and it's always done through the mail. They also will never call and tell someone they have a warrant for their arrest.

"Scams like these are rather common and oftentimes the caller will use the name of an actual employee of the agency in hopes of tricking the citizen into sending money. We appreciate citizens contacting us to make us aware of this scam and are thankful they didn’t send money to the caller,” states Captain Imprevento of the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office Consumer Protection Unit.

They ask that anyone who's fallen victim to the scam and sent money to the callers contact the Norfolk Police Department's Economic Crimes Division or the NSO's Office Consumer Protect Unit at 757-664-4344 to file a report.
