Norfolk rolling out speed camera program in 10 school zones

Once the warning period ends on May 3, drivers caught speeding could face a $100 fine.

NORFOLK, Va. — With nearly two dozen speed cameras installed across school zones in Norfolk, officials are now warning drivers that the photo enforcement program will begin soon.

Beginning on March 4, the 19 cameras installed around 10 Norfolk Public School locations will be activated. However, Norfolk officials say the following 60 days will serve as a warning period for drivers.

There will be signs within 100 feet of the camera's location reminding drivers to slow their roll.

Once the warning period ends on May 3, drivers caught speeding could face a $100 fine.

The camera additions intend to get drivers to slow down and keep students at nearby schools safe. Officials said that speed safety cameras have reduced both roadway deaths and injuries by up to 47%.

Here's a list of the schools where cameras were installed nearby:

  • Bay View Elementary School
  • Larchmont Elementary School
  • Little Creek Elementary School
  • Norview Elementary School
  • Richard Bowling Elementary School
  • William H. Ruffner Academy
  • Southside STEM Academy at Campostella

Norfolk joins Portsmouth in adding speed cameras in school zones, with Portsmouth issuing thousands of citations in the first month after the warning period. A spokesperson for the Portsmouth Police Department told 13News Now that more than 4,500 citations had been mailed out as of Feb. 1.

The department staff are working to add automated red light cameras and school bus stop arm cameras in Portsmouth too.
