Norfolk Police say 'suspicious package' at HRT building determined to not be a threat

Hampton Roads Transit said the package is being investigated by law enforcement.

NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk Police Department has determined a suspicious package found on E 18th Street Monday afternoon, is not a threat.

Police say that the Bomb Squad was on scene in the 500 block of E 18th Street. Police received the call reporting the package around 12 p.m. Officials cordoned off the area near the Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) building by Monticello Avenue.

Around 2:20 p.m., police updated that they determined the package was not at threat.

"Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) today received a suspicious package at one of its facilities," HRT said in a statement following the incident. "The package and its contents are being investigated by law enforcement. HRT is cooperating fully with the investigation. There is currently no impact on service."

Shortly after 6 p.m. HRT said the all-clear had been given in the building and that it reopened and resumed normal operations.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue said that in addition to the bomb squad, fire marshals and members of the hazmat team responded to the scene.
