Peace Officers' Memorial Service held in Norfolk as part of National Police Week

The ceremony honors the 39 Norfolk police officers "who made the ultimate sacrifice while working to keep citizens safe and proudly wearing the badge."

NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk Police Department is honoring officers killed in the line of duty in a ceremony held on Tuesday.

The annual Peace Officers' Memorial Day Service at the MacArthur Memorial Center Square remembers the 39 Norfolk police officers "who made the ultimate sacrifice while working to keep citizens safe and proudly wearing the badge." Their names were read during a ceremony on Tuesday morning.

The service also paid tribute to surviving family members of fallen officers.

The week of May 15 has been designated National Police Week by the United States Congress since 1962. This year's National Police Week is from May 12 - 18.
