Norfolk International Airport sets new record for most guns confiscated in a year

After officers at Norfolk International confiscated three firearms last week, a new record has been set.

NORFOLK, Va. — There’s a new record for the number of guns confiscated at Norfolk International Airport (ORF). Thirty-two firearms have been intercepted so far this year, surpassing the previous record -- 29 -- set in 2023.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said they were caught at checkpoints on Thursday. One was in the carry-on bag of a man from Newport News, while the other belonged to a man from North Carolina. On Saturday, a woman from Chesapeake was also stopped with a gun.

All three guns were confiscated by airport authority police. The Norfolk Commonwealth's Attorney could criminally prosecute these cases.

The TSA reminds travelers that passengers are only permitted to travel with guns in checked baggage. Guns must be unloaded and packed in a hard-sided locked case. That case must be taken to the airline check-in counter to be declared.

TSA has more details on how to properly travel with a gun on its website. If you have further questions, you can contact the airline you are traveling with for any additional requirements on traveling with guns and ammunition.
