NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk Sheriff's Office was looking into the death of an inmate Thursday after a deputy found him unconscious in a jail cell.
A spokeswoman for the sheriff's office said the deputy was on rounds shortly before 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when the deputy found Travis Antorio Haynes hanging in a cell.
Jail staff members started performing lifesaving measures. Haynes died at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital at 8:25 p.m.
Haynes, 31, was booked into the jail on June 7 on a robbery charge.
The sheriff's office is conducting an internal review. The medical examiner's office will determine cause and manner of death.
The Norfolk Police Department is investigating the incident as an undetermined death.
