Man stopped from bringing loaded gun onto flight at Norfolk International Airport

The TSA said the incident happened on Friday, when a security checkpoint found a handgun loaded with 13 bullets, including one in the chamber.

NORFOLK, Va. — TSA officers at Norfolk International Airport (ORF) say they stopped a Florida man from bringing a loaded handgun on a flight.

The TSA said the incident happened on Friday, when a security checkpoint found a handgun loaded with 13 bullets, including one in the chamber.

It's the 10th firearm TSA officers have spotted at the checkpoint so far this year at ORF.

The man was criminally cited by police and also faces a stiff financial civil penalty for the incident. The penalty for carrying weapons through TSA can reach as high as $15,000.

The TSA reminds passengers that they are only permitted to travel with firearms in checked baggage. Guns must be unloaded and then packed in a hard-sided locked case. The locked case must be taken to the airline check-in counter to be declared. TSA has details on how to properly travel with a firearm posted on its website.
