NORFOLK, Va. —
The Safety Action Plan is a city-wide plan from Norfolk’s Department of Transportation that looks to create safer streets for everyone.
Anna Dewey, the project coordinator for the city, says the plan is part of Norfolk's larger approach to bring traffic fatalities to zero.
"This is a citywide plan we're looking into where people's concerns are,” Dewey said
According to the city's website, the Norfolk Safety Action Plan aims to provide accessible and equitable multimodal transportation options throughout the city — promoting a safer, more inclusive and connected transportation network for all.
Meetings are taking place across the city this week. Those who can't make it to the meetings are encouraged to fill out the online survey. Those who want to learn more can also leave comments and markers on the interactive map.
The initiative aims to reduce roadway fatalities and serious injuries by working with the community to identify challenges, develop effective strategies and implement solutions.
The program is federally funded through the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Safe Streets and Roads for All program. The city has nearly a quarter million dollars to use on the plan.
City officials said the project is still in its initial phases. They are planning to use the rest of the year for input and data gathering and hoping for formal adoption from the city council at the start of next year.
