Norfolk City Jail inmate tests positive for bacterial meningitis

The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office says "Currently, there are no confirmed cases of bacterial meningitis in the Norfolk City Jail and all quarantines have been lifted."

NORFOLK, Va. — A Norfolk City Jail inmate tested positive for bacterial meningitis while at a local hospital last Friday, the city sheriff's office said.

The Norfolk Sheriff's Office wrote in a news release they and jail staff were contacted by the city's health department on Monday and told that an inmate at the jail tested positive last Friday.

The inmate did not return to the jail after the positive test result. They were booked into the jail on March 1 and placed in a cell block with other inmates.

After the notification from the health department, deputies and jail staff supplied staff and inmates who may have had contact with the infected inmate with a dose of antibiotics and initiated quarantine protocols laid out by the Virginia Department of Health.

The Virginia Department of Health is supporting and assisting the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office in our efforts and conducting any necessary follow-ups, including contact tracing.

The sheriff's office ended the release by saying "Currently, there are no confirmed cases of bacterial meningitis in the Norfolk City Jail and all quarantines have been lifted."
