NORFOLK, Va. — Unofficial election results show one likely winner in a Norfolk City Council race, but more uncertainty in a second council race.
Norfolk's Superwards 6 and 7 are up for election, with neither of the incumbents running for reelection. As of Wednesday, all precincts are reporting their results, with provisional ballots outstanding.
Superward 6
Jeremy McGee self-declared his win to the Superward 6 City Council seat by a percentage of 69.34%, compared to 30.66% for opponent Jeremy Mason. The results are unofficial until the votes can be certified.
Superward 6 wraps around the city, stretching from East Oceanview to the Chelsea neighborhood.
McGee, a small business owner, said he wanted to make the city more business-friendly as well as address housing, education, and flooding, and combat crime.
Superward 7
Five people were running for the Superward 7 seat, which covers a wide portion of the center of the city, from Rosemont to Campostella. The competitors were Carlos Clanton, Phillip Hawkins Jr., Rodney Jordan, Leon Judge, and Christine Smith.
With provisional votes outstanding, Clanton leads the pack, but Hawkins trails him by only about 100 votes, 22.98% to 22.72%.
Behind Clanton and Hawkins, Jordan has received 21.81% of the vote, Smith has received 19.03% and Judge received 13.47% of the vote.
The candidates spent the campaign focusing on issues like crime, affordable housing, infrastructure, and the economy.
