NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk City council members voted unanimously to allow a new non-profit to come to the Mermaid City that will be dedicated to helping those looking for affordable housing.
The resolution specifically came from the city's Redevelopment and Housing Authority. The goal is to create a non-profit that will provide educational, employment and recreational opportunities.
It will also allow residents to apply for grants that would otherwise be unavailable due to its status as a non-profit.
"I had to come and say great job, thank you, and surely we offer our support to whatever is needed and required," said one supporter.
Supporters of the resolution lined Norfolk City Chambers. It is unclear at this point just how much financial support could be acquired, but the resolution also pointed to 'development activities' to improve the quality of life for Norfolk residents.
A recent Redfin survey showed that more than half of U.S. homeowners cite access to affordable housing as having a significant impact on their vote for the November election. One-third said affordable housing is one of their top three issues.
"Hopefully this will empower people to do what needs to be done and help people actually get the homes they deserve," said a supporter.
There is no word yet on when the non-profit will come to Norfolk or what its name will be.
