Norfolk church damaged by fire caused by lightning

A church in Norfolk sustained damaged after it was struck by lightning Saturday afternoon.

NORFOLK, Va (WVEC) -- A church in Norfolk sustained damaged after it was struck by lightning Saturday afternoon.

Around 2 p.m. firefighters responded to a report of a church fire located in the 900 block of Middlesex Street, which had been caused by a lightning strike during thunderstorms.

When units arrived at Mount Zion Baptist Church, they found a small fire on the roof of the church.

Firefighters utilized the aerial ladder truck to access the roof and extinguished the fire.

Firefighters conducted a search inside the church and checked for any further fire extension.

After an investigation inside the church, the fire was deemed under control .The church was unoccupied at the time of the event.

The roof received minor damage and the fire was contained to the area of the lighting strike. This fire will not impact any services to be held at the church in the near future.
