NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Fire crews quickly contained a fire that swept through an apartment kitchen Tuesday afternoon.
A concerned citizen called in the fire at 7600 block of Victory Dr. around 12:40 p.m. after noticing smoke coming from one of the apartment units.
Fire units arrived and reported smoke billowing from the second floor of a two-story apartment building.
Firefighters entered the apartment and discovered a fire inside the kitchen area, but were quickly able to suppress the flames.
They conducted a primary search, then searched the apartment for any hot spots and possible fire extension.
No one was home when the fire started, but due to the smoke and fire damage, officials have declared the apartment uninhabitable.
Investigators found the unit did not have working smoke alarms and are still searching for what exactly sparked the flames.
