17-year-old stabbed at Maury High School in Norfolk; 16-year-old arrested, police say

The 16-year-old was charged with malicious wounding and having a weapon on school property.

NORFOLK, Va. — A 16-year-old boy was arrested after another teenager was stabbed at Matthew Fontaine Maury High School in Norfolk Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The stabbing happened around dismissal time, around 2:05 p.m. According to the Norfolk Police Department, it happened outside of the school in the 1500 block of DeBree Avenue while the two were fighting. 

When police arrived, they found the victim, a 17-year-old boy, with several stab wounds. Medics took the boy to the hospital with injuries that were serious but weren't considered to be life-threatening.

The 16-year-old has been charged with malicious wounding and having a weapon on school property. He is being held at the Norfolk Detention Center.

A spokesperson for Norfolk Public Schools said the victim was a student, but the suspect wasn't, and that the incident is being investigated by the Norfolk Police Department.
