3 hospitalized after Norfolk shooting in broad daylight

Roughly five minutes after police got to the scene, two other men showed up at a hospital with gunshot wounds.

NORFOLK, Va. — Three people are in the hospital Tuesday after a shooting in broad daylight.

According to the Norfolk Police Department (NPD), officers responded to Rugby Street for a gunshot disturbance just before 6:30 p.m.

Norfolk police say officers found one man hurt at the scene. First responders took him to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Roughly five minutes after police got to the scene, two other men showed up at a hospital with gunshot wounds. Police say one has serious injuries and the other has non-life-threatening injuries.

"Detectives determined these two incidents to be related," NPD said in a tweet.

NPD's Assistant Chief Michele Naughton spoke to 13News Now at the scene. She said investigators do not believe there's a threat to the community.

“It’s a very fluid situation. We’re trying to encounter everything that’s going on. We’ve got detectives in route trying to piece everything together," Naughton said.

When asked about any possible suspects, Naughton said the following:

“Until we can piece it together, I can’t say for sure who's suspect and who's victim, but I do know we have three individuals who were shot here. This is a very unfortunate situation," the assistant police chief said.

Naughton said this isn't the first time Norfolk police have seen daytime violence over the past couple of weeks. She urges community members to report anything suspicious.

“If you see something suspicious, you see an argument, something you believe is coming out of hand, giving us that notification beforehand so we can be on scene hopefully to prevent these from occurring," Naughton said.

Neighbors 13News Now spoke to didn’t hear any gunshots, but they couldn’t help but notice the large police presence on Rugby Street. Detectives, a K9, and a forensic unit filled the block for more than an hour.
