Man dies after shooting in Norfolk's Young Terrace neighborhood; residents call for peace

Norfolk police say shortly after 11 p.m. on Monday, officers responded to E. Olney Road for a report of a gunshot victim.

NORFOLK, Va. — A man has died after a shooting homicide in Norfolk's Young Terrace neighborhood late Monday night, police said.

Neighbors who 13News Now spoke with are tired of the violence in their city. Some of them felt like things just calmed down in Young Terrace until a shooting rattled East Olney Road.

Norfolk police said 42-year-old Edward K. Collins is dead after someone shot him. When officers arrived shortly after 11 p.m., they found Collins badly hurt. A police spokesperson said the victim lived in the area.

Medics took him to the hospital, where he later died.

Ricky Brown lives nearby. He's a member of the locally-based Guns Down initiative led by anti-violence activist Clay Marquez.

"Please put the guns down. If not for me, do it for the children because we have no future if we don't get them guns down and stop killing each other," said Brown. He calls for peaceful resolutions to conflicts.

Brandon Brickhouse, another resident of Norfolk, pleaded for the same thing.

"I want to see my son grow up. So, hopefully, people out here get some type of control over this. Because we've got some young kids out here playing," said Brickhouse. "Bullets don't have no names."

A couple of neighbors off-camera told 13News Now they heard a barrage of gunfire. One woman said she looked out the window to find a man lying on the ground and receiving CPR.

About three hours after the shooting and less than a mile away from East Olney Road, Norfolk police said they found another man stabbed on May Avenue. The 22-year-old victim should survive.

Detectives are still looking into what prompted that attack and the one in Young Terrace. They also believe at this time that the two acts are not connected.

Police haven't released any information about a suspect in either case yet.
