NORFOLK, Va. — A man was convicted on charges stemming from a 2022 shooting in Norfolk that left a man dead and another person injured.
The Norfolk Commonwealth's Attorney's Office said Rhodean Harolquan Rhodes-Hamlin, 27, was found guilty of second-degree murder, aggravated malicious wounding, and two counts of the use of a firearm in the commission of those felonies.
The conviction comes after a two-day trial and less than an hour of deliberation by the jury.
The shooting happened in the 3500 block of Mangrove Avenue on July 19, 2022, leaving Sidney Norman Parker, 37, dead, and his mother with a gunshot wound in the arm.
According to the Norfolk Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, Parker and Rhodes-Hamlin got into a fight after Parker thought he saw Rhodes-Hamlin push his girlfriend, so he pushed back.
Rhodes-Hamlin stumbled backward but didn't fall and wasn't hurt, but he pulled out a handgun and fired 10 rounds.
Six of the bullets hit Parker in his torso and groin, while one hit his mother, who was standing next to him. Medics took Parker to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Rhodes-Hamlin ran off after the shooting and nearby businesses' security video footage showed him as he walked by. The Norfolk Police Department arrested him on July 26, 2022.
During the trial, Rhodes-Hamlin claimed he saw several people with guns during the fight and was acting in self-defense after Parker pushed him. Parker wasn't armed, the Norfolk Commonwealth's Attorney's Office said.
Rhodes-Hamlin is scheduled to be sentenced on March 22.
