NORFOLK, Va. — Heather Foley says a quick trip to Wendy's in Norfolk during her lunch break on Monday turned into a traumatizing experience.
Foley says she visited the Wendy's frequently and usually parks between the restaurant and a nearby Home Depot. She said she never felt unsafe in the area and had no issues until her car was stolen at gunpoint.
"I didn’t think anything of that guy when he walked by first didn’t think anything of them at all, and then he turned around and shoved a gun in my face and stole my car," Foley recalled. "He came up to me and said 'Phone. Keys. Wallet. Now, now!'"
Less than 24 hours after the carjacking, Norfolk police said officers Foley's car in Virginia Beach and brought the suspect, 35-year-old Cameron Lake, into custody.
Lake was arrested in Chesapeake just after 4 p.m. and is currently held in Norfolk City Jail without bond on gun and carjacking-related charges. He also faces charges for another carjacking from the day before.
Foley, who heading to the DMV when she was carjacked, told 13News Now she still hasn't had the car return or the important documents inside them yet.
"I need my things my tangible things back, so that I can see that this is OK. Everything‘s back," she said.
Foley now has a message for others.
"Leave your windows up even if it's pretty, lock your doors, keep your face out of your phone, pay attention and know what's going on around you. Don't allow yourself to be in a position where you could be the victim," she warns.
Foley is thankful police arrested the man who stole her car. Sadly, she says she’ll never truly have peace of mind again.
"You stole my peace. You make me fear for my life, for a piece of property."
