NORFOLK, Va. —
Macarthur Pharmacy is set to close next Wednesday, leaving the area without a walkable pharmacy.
A trusted business since opening in 2000, the MacArthur Pharmacy has served multiple generations in the community and many are sad to see it go.
"I would say it's kind of like a staple in the neighborhood area. Seems kind of like a great, like small-knit community, and everyone there's been great pleasant to work with," James Chapin, a Norfolk resident tells 13News Now.
Owners of the pharmacy say they’ve accepted an offer to sell the pharmacy business to Rite Aid. A sign on the front door lets customers know their prescriptions will move to the store on 21st Street in Ghent along with some employees.
Vice President of the Downtown Norfolk Civic League, Preston Carraway will miss the bakery but knows it's the right move.
“The owners will be retiring and moving on to a different phase of life. Those of us here, we're we're a little disappointed because they won't be here. We're hoping something new will come in,” Carraway said.
He hopes whatever comes with the new store will keep the neighborhood vibrant.
Local property manager Bobby Wright is taking over the space. He says the vision is to create a store that offers both convenience items and a farm-to-table stand. It’s something downtown doesn't have right now. Wright said there’s no timetable for when the new store will open.
