NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- The Milan Post Office on Colley Avenue will officially close its doors on Friday, Feb. 23 at 5 p.m.
According to the Postal Service, delivery services will not be impacted and efforts to find a new Post Office location has begun.
Until service can be restored in the new location, customers can pick up their Post Office Box mail at Norfolk Main Post Office, located at 600 Church Street in Norfolk.
13News Now spoke with long time customers who said they heard rumors about the closing and were saddened to hear the news.
“To a community, I think it’s one of the hearts of the community," said Elizabeth Hogue. "It's is sort of a beating heart.”
Prior to the location's official closing, post office officials said they were 'cooperating' with the landlord to get the building open as soon as possible.
What changed? Officials didn't answer that question, but we contact the landlord.
He didn't want to be identified, but told 13News Now he had no idea about plans to close. The lease was ending next month, but there were no troubles, he explained.
The last day for PO Box customers to retrieve mail from their current PO Box will be Saturday, Feb. 24, until 5 p.m. Any mail left inside PO Boxes will be moved to the Norfolk Main Post Office.
Employees from Milan Post Office will work at Norfolk Main Post Office.
