NORFOLK, Va. — A child went to the hospital after a car hit them on a busy road in Norfolk on Tuesday, authorities said.
The crash happened on Tidewater Drive near the intersection of Vista Street at around 9:20 a.m.
The driver stayed at the scene and spoke to 13News Now. The driver said she tried to swerve out of the way but accidentally hit a little girl she said was playing in the road.
Police did not say the age of the victim.
The driver said the child got up after the crash. Medics took the child to the hospital for minor injuries.
Norfolk police are investigating the crash. Police did not say if the driver will face any charges.
State data shows Tidewater Drive has had at least 53 crashes so far this year. It's an issue neighbors say they know all too well.
"Definitely scary," said Robert Fogle, who lives nearby. “I have my daughter inside. So, it’s just kind of scary with the drivers around here, in Virginia in general.”
Data shows Norfolk has had at least 19 pedestrian-involved crashes so far this year. Just last month, another pedestrian got hit by a car on Tidewater Drive.
Neighbors told 13News Now they'd like to see more speed limit signs or stoplights along Tidewater Drive.
