NORFOLK, Va. — The walls are up, the shelves are mostly stocked, and on April 10 the doors to the new IKEA in Norfolk will officially open.
Charlie Plisco is the store manager for the new home furnishings store. He said this it’s the 50th store just in the United States, but he expects thousands of people at the grand opening.
He believes it’s 331,000 square-feet of inspiration, for your living space.
“It’s supposed to provide the choices and options for whatever your pocketbook is. The size of your space and your personal style,” said Plisco.
From the start, the facility is family-friendly with a supervised play area for kids.
“So, when you come to shop, you can leave your kids here and go shop un-interrupted,” said Plisco.

As you work your way up through the 42 room displays and model homes, you’ll see more than 10,000 products.
“The prices are so much better than what you’re going to find anywhere else in the market,” said Plisco, who is from Hampton Roads. “It’s just fabulous to show all of my friends and family what a great place this is.”
Each IKEA model display is unique, using examples from homes and apartments in our region. Throughout the entire store, you’ll see an eco-friendly theme. Even 80 percent of the building is powered by solar panels on the roof.
Once you pick out the products you want, you can take it home and assemble it yourself or reach out to them for help or use Task Rabbit’s services.
“IKEA is in 40 countries, so the directions don’t have any words; they’re just diagrams.”
Plisco said IKEA has everything you need, so you’re bound to shop until you’re hungry. That means you shouldn’t leave without eating their famous Swedish meatballs!
