NORFOLK, Va. — An inmate at the Norfolk City Jail died after a medical emergency early Friday morning, deputies said.
An investigation revealed that the inmate had a medical emergency while inside the jail. Fellow inmates in the cell block notified the deputies and the jail's medical team responded, according to the Norfolk Sheriff's Office.
Medics took the inmate to a hospital to be treated, but he died several hours later. The Norfolk Sheriff's Office said the inmate's identity won't be shared until next of kin notification is complete.
The Norfolk Police Department is handling the investigation of the inmate's death under Virginia state law requirements for in-custody deaths.
The Norfolk Sheriff's Office said the Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the inmate's official cause of death.
