Inmate dies in custody of Norfolk City Jail, investigation underway

33-year-old Saleia Gregory has died while in the custody of Norfolk City Jail. An investigation into her cause of death is underway.

NORFOLK, Va. — An inmate died while in the custody of Norfolk City Jail on August 10.

The inmate, identified as 33-year-old Saleia Gregory, was booked on June 27, 2024.

The Norfolk Sheriff's Office and Norfolk Police Department are investigating her death. A preliminary investigation states that the inmate suffered a medical emergency, but does not specify beyond that. Investigators say no foul play is suspected at the time.

Officials say she was attended by jail medical personnel following her medical emergency and was later taken to a local hospital for treatment, where she was pronounced dead hours later.

Her death has also been reported to the Virginia Department of Corrections, the agency that reviews all in-custody deaths.  The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death.

The release, sent by Norfolk Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Jamie Bastas, shares a statement from the staff that reads: "Sheriff Joe Baron and all of us at the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office send our condolences to the family of Ms. Gregory. The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office is committed to providing an environment of life, health, and safety for those in our custody and their well-being is always our top concern."
