NORFOLK, Va. — Millions of Americans, including thousands of Virginians, are expected to take to the skies to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday.
According to the Transportation Security Administration, Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be some of the busiest travel days. Officers are expected to screen 2.6 million passengers on Tuesday, and then another 2.7 million by Wednesday.
However, Sunday is expected to be the height of travel. TSA expects to screen 2.9 million people, narrowly beating a record set in June.
"It's not overwhelmingly bad here, but I've heard how crazy it is at other places," said one traveler.
People looking to fly out of Norfolk International Airport (ORF) arrived hours before their flight. Fear of the holiday travel rush, and stories of long lines at security prompted many to come in early.
"I just want to see my daughter, so we got here three hours early. I don't mind," said one passenger.
Overall, the lines moved quickly at ORF on Tuesday -- but heavy foot traffic is expected in the days to come.
ORF recently ranked as the 5th worst in the country for "canceled flights," according to federal data compiled InsureMyTrip.
Flight times, delays and possible cancellations could change as the Thanksgiving holiday draws closer.
