Hundreds impacted by Downtown Norfolk power outage

Dominion Energy confirms crews are working to restore power to the more than 900 people impacted by the outage.

NORFOLK, Va. — More than 900 people were without power in Downtown Norfolk Tuesday afternoon.

As of 2 p.m., 908 customers were without power. Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University was also impacted by the outage.

A spokesperson with Dominion Energy shares that underground power lines in the area were affected. She adds that they require the use of specialized equipment to pinpoint and repair those issues underground.

The outage was determined to be caused by line equipment failure, according to Dominion Energy.

The outage caused residences, businesses, and even traffic lights to lose power, including at several busy intersections.

For drivers who may come across these intersections on their daily commute: when encountering a traffic light that is out, treat the intersection like a four-way stop.

A crew has been on site since about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. Hundreds of people have since had their power restored, but as of 3:45 p.m., more than 300 customers are still without power.

A Dominion Energy spokesperson shared that repairs for the outage were finished around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, and that everyone affected by the outage had their power incrementally restored since then.
