NORFOLK, Va. — Five people were displaced after a fire damaged a home near the Park Place area of Norfolk on Friday morning.
The fire happened in the 200 block of West 28th Street, close to the intersection of Monticello Avenue and Church Street.
A spokesperson for Norfolk Fire-Rescue said the fire was reported around 9 a.m. and firefighters arrived to find a three-story duplex with smoke and flames visible in the back. The firefighters' response was upgraded to a second alarm due to strong winds and the neighboring houses being close by.
According to Norfolk Fire-Rescue, crews started to battle the blaze on the inside, but they had to get out as the fire quickly spread around them.
After getting most of the fire out on the outside, the firefighters went back inside to extinguish the rest, the spokesperson said. It was under control shortly after 10:15 p.m.
No one was hurt, but the Red Cross was notified to help the people displaced by the fire.
It's unknown what caused the fire, but it is being investigated, the spokesperson said.
