Historical Uruguayan tall ship docking in Norfolk for 4th of July

The Capitan Miranda, the 198-foot-long and 26-foot-tall Uruguayan Navy's tall ship originally built in 1930, will be open to the public for free tours July 3 - 4.

NORFOLK, Va. — A historical Uruguayan tall ship is coming to Norfolk for five days on July 4th, officials say. 

The 198-foot-long and 26-foot-tall Uruguayan Navy's tall ship the Capitan Miranda is returning to Norfolk from July 2 -5 next to the Waterside District at 333 Waterside Drive.

It will be docked while the 4th of July Great American Picnic & Fireworks takes place in Town Point Park from 5 to 10 p.m. on Independence Day.

The ship originally served as a survey ship and is now "the official training ship for the Uruguayan Naval Academy at Montevideo." 

Officials with Festevents say that Capitan Miranda was built in 1930 in Spain, and has since been refitted and rerigged. The ship's crew totals 77.

The ship will arrive around 11 a.m. on July 2 and head out at 10 a.m. on July 5.

The Capitan Miranda will be open to the public for free tours on July 3 from 3 - 7 p.m. and July 4 from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.
