NORFOLK, Va. — A community anti-violence group in Norfolk wants people to put down their guns and help each other.
On Tuesday, around 7 p.m., someone called the Norfolk Police Department after someone shot a man along Lindenwood Avenue near the Triple C Convenience store.
Medics took the man to the hospital, and he is expected to recover, police said.
On Wednesday, police patrolled the area.
This latest shooting happened near a store where 84-year-old James Carter was shot and killed.
“Anybody who knows about Mister Carter store is like a monument to the Norfolk, to the black community,” said Calvin Williams.
Williams is the founder of the anti-violence group MY2K Foundation. Last Friday, he said he participated in the walk to end violence, which attracted a few dozen people.
“The walk is good, but what happens the day after? The walk is to bring awareness. Now that we’ve bought awareness, what [will] the community do?” said Williams.
While Williams appreciates the police departments, he believes it is time for people to make their neighborhoods safe.
“It’s on us. I mean, the police can do what they do, but sometimes the community is going to have to come together, and we got to talk amongst each other actually to come to a conflict resolution,” said Williams.
Police are still investigating the circumstances of Tuesday night’s shooting. Police ask anyone with information to call the crime line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
