Gas leak repairs finished on Norfolk's Granby Street

Norfolk Fire-Rescue said a third-party contractor had been digging when its crew hit a pipeline.

NORFOLK, Va. — Repairs have been completed following a gas leak on Granby Street in Downtown Norfolk.

It took much of Monday for Virginia Natural Gas crews to fix a damaged pipeline. Crews had to shut off gas meters to homes in the Talbot Hall neighborhood.

Norfolk Fire-Rescue said the gas leak was first reported just before noon Monday when officials a third-party contractor was digging and struck a MDPE pipeline, "inadvertently" damaging it.

Norfolk Fire-Rescue, a fire marshal, the Norfolk Police Department, and Virginia Natural Gas all responded to the incident.

"Due to the size and location of the gas line that is leaking, it is anticipated that this event could be ongoing for several hours," NFR said in an emailed statement on Monday.

The site was determined safe at around 3 p.m. Monday. Virginia Natural Gas crews then visited and reviewed each home that had its gas meter shut off and began the process of restoring service to those impacted residences.

"Virginia Natural Gas understands the frustrations and concerns that come with service interruptions. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and assure our valued customers that we are deploying all available resources to resolve this situation promptly," Virginia Natural Gas said in a statement.
