NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State University Spartans community is mourning the loss of former star women's basketball player Amber Brown.
The university said Brown passed away on Tuesday, at the age of 28.
"Her dedication, resilience, and vibrant spirit left an indelible mark on our Spartan family," said NSU women's basketball coach Larry Vickers. "Our thoughts and condolences are with her family, friends, and teammates during this difficult time."
Brown played for NSU for three seasons, from 2013 to 2016. On New Year's Day 2016, she was found unresponsive in her dorm room and rushed to the hospital. She was placed in a medically induced coma for a week and then remained hospitalized for more than a month due to a serious medical condition.
While still recovering, she received the N4A Wilma Rudolph Student-Athlete Achievement Award in 2017 and also graduated with honors with a degree in psychology.
Brown's family has set up a GoFundMe to assist with funeral and memorial costs.
