Norfolk man gets nearly 4 years in death of 9-month-old daughter

A judge sentenced 29-year-old Kasiam Tinsley to 15 years in prison on felony child abuse and felony child neglect charges but suspended most of that time.

NORFOLK, Va. — A Virginia man will spend nearly four years in prison for the death of his 9-month-old daughter.

Circuit Judge Joseph Migliozzi Jr. on Friday sentenced 29-year-old Kasiam Tinsley to 15 years in prison on felony child abuse and felony child neglect charges but suspended most of that time. Migliozzi earlier had acquitted Tinsley of second-degree murder and malicious wounding.

The Virginian-Pilot reports experts determined Makayla Smith died on November 2018 of injuries that included skull fractures and broken ribs.

Defense attorney Eric Korslund during the trial suggested it was impossible to determine who caused Makayla's injuries because many people were in the house when she was hurt.

Witnesses testified they heard the baby cry the night before she died, but none saw Tinsley hitting, shaking or dropping her.
