Broadway musical, Disney's Aladdin, coming to Chrysler Hall in Norfolk

The iconic evil sorcerer Jafar is being played by Anand Nagraj, a Yorktown native. The musical features award-winning sets and familiar songs from the animated film.

NORFOLK, Va. — Disney's "Aladdin" turned Broadway musical is coming to the stage in Norfolk with local talent.

Musical lovers and Disney fans alike can come to Chrysler Hall from Oct. 25 to 29 to catch this performance.

The two-and-a-half-hour musical features direction, choreography, music, lyrics, and costumes from award-winning artists and, of course, well-known songs from the original animated film Aladdin, which was the highest-grossing film of 1992.

The iconic evil sorcerer Jafar is being played by Anand Nagraj, a Yorktown native who studied at the University of Richmond. Nagraj is excited to come back to Virginia for this production.

“Disney’s villains are the most fun to portray,” he said. “You get to approach them like you would a character in Shakespeare. That level of precision, the big feelings – I’m using all those tools I’ve learned over the past 20 years.”

Ngraj has appeared in a half-dozen films and television shows including "Chicago PD", "Chicago Fire", and "Proven Innocent".

Nagraj, who grew up in Yorktown, was 8 years old when the original Aladdin movie came out. “It was hugely formative for me, not least of all because there were characters in a Disney movie who looked like me. I didn’t realize at the time how important that was.”

The tour showcases over 150 lights, 15 tons of scenery and lighting and at least 75 performers for each show. The costumes used for the show feature over 2,000 fabrics from Morocco, Turkey, India, Uzbekistan, China, Tahiti, Japan, Guatemala, Mexico, France, Italy, England and Germany with one performance having 38 costume changes in under a minute.

You can find ticket prices, times and more information on their site. You can also enter a digital lottery for $35 tickets on the SevenVenues website.
