NORFOLK, Va. — As authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire that displaced more than 30 people at the Mira Mar apartment complex on Tuesday, the community is helping them rebuild their lives.
Fire rubble is what remains of the buildings after that Tuesday fire at the Mira Mar apartment complex in Norfolk.
The flames destroyed one building and windy conditions caused the fire to spread to neighboring buildings.
“It could have been us and because it wasn’t us we thought it was necessary to come out here and see how we could help,” said Bishop Percy Barnes of Fishers of Men Fellowship Center.
After learning about the fire and with the holiday fast approaching, Bishop Barnes felt called to do something.
“I could only imagine what these people, how devastated they are and being impacted by such a horrendous tragedy that has happened out here,” he said.
Bishop Barnes called members of his church to raise money for the victims.
“We’re soliciting donations right now. We’re soliciting monetary gifts and all 100% is going to this group.”
Other people, such as the Norfolk City Councilor candidate Carlos Clanton, also found ways to pitch in and help.
Clanton says he's working with the Norfolk Public Schools Superintendent to support students and their families as they recover.
“This is the time where we as people need to show love,” said Bishop Barnes.
To join in and help Fishers of Men Fellowship Center assist those impacted by Tuesday’s Norfolk apartment fire, drop off donations at 7917 Halprin Drive on Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The items requested are gently used clothes, shoes, coats, new undergarments, hygiene items, pots, pans, and dishes.
