NORFOLK, Va. — Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated every year on the third Monday of January. The holiday celebrates him and his legacy. Several community events are going on in honor of the holiday.
The Virginia Peninsula Food Banks is having a food drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Organizers say last year, the food drive brought in over 26,000 meals with the help of both food and money donations. Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones and Congressman Bobby Scott among others are helping in hosting the event.
The 9th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Drive is taking place at New Grafton Baptist Church in Newport News at noon and will feature a hot lunch after the service provided by Eastern Virginia Medical School.
In Norfolk, the city is having its annual Martin Luther King Jr. ceremony and march starting at 10 a.m. at the Attucks Theatre followed by a trek to the MLK Jr. memorial.
