Man in custody following hours-long barricade situation in Norfolk

Police received a call reporting a person with a weapon 5200 block of Janet Drive Sunday around 1 p.m. Police determined the man was having a mental health crisis.

NORFOLK, Va. — One man is in custody following an hours-long barricade situation in Norfolk on Sunday.

Norfolk Police say they received a call reporting a person with a weapon 5200 block of Janet Drive at around 1 p.m.

A bomb squad, drones, and roughly a dozen police cars filled the neighborhood for more than three hours.

13News Now spoke to one woman, Brenda Harrell, who lives near the previously barricaded home. Harrell said four officers staged inside her home to a better vantage point of the house across the street.

"[The officers ] came in, and they brought all of their equipment... They asked us to stay in the back because they didn’t want us near the front of the window because they didn’t know what was going to happen," Harrell said.

Police say when officers arrived they determined the man was having a mental health crisis. The Hostage/Crisis Negotiation Team and Special Operations Team responded and after negotiation, the man was taken into custody a little before 4:15 p.m.

He was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Investigators say no one is hurt.
