NORFOLK, Va. — CORRECTION: This story has been updated to remove part of an eyewitness account of the crash that referred to the driver of the sedan as an ODU student. A school spokesperson said the driver is not enrolled at the University.
One man is dead and another was hurt after a two-car crash near Old Dominion University Wednesday night, according to eyewitnesses and Norfolk police.
It happened at 49th Street and Bluestone Avenue around 6:45 p.m., the Norfolk Police Department confirmed.
Dispatchers received a call about a vehicle accident at the intersection around 7 p.m. The first driver, an 80-year-old, was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the other car was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The police's initial investigation determined that the 80-year-old man had a medical emergency while driving that caused him to lose control of his Dodge truck and hit the other car as well as a tree.
Police say they will release the victim's identity once his next of kin has been notified.
According to the eyewitness, a pickup truck collided with a sedan right outside ODU's football stadium. The vehicles ended up in the middle of a busy pedestrian walkway.
