NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Some Dominion Energy customers in Newport News remained without power as of 1 p.m. Sunday after a vehicle crash broke a power pole.

About 4,700 customers in areas off Oyster Point Road initially lost power just before 7 a.m., according to Dominion Energy spokeswoman Cherise Newsome. Crews were able to use self-healing technology on the power lines to reroute the flow of power temporarily for most customers.

By 9 a.m., most customers had been restored to power. About 140 customers were restored later Sunday once crews made permanent repairs, Newsome stated.

Newport News Police said the accident happened on Oyster Point Road just west of Jefferson Avenue. The driver, an adult male, had fallen asleep, the investigation found. He was uninjured and was cited for reckless driving.
