NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Thrive Peninsula, a Newport News-based nonprofit is bringing a fitness-focused food drive to the community throughout September.

The nonprofit is partnering with Image Capital Group to host the "5 for Thrive: Food and Fitness Drive." The month-long initiative focuses on creating healthier lifestyles in the community.

The program focuses on collecting nutritious food and lightweight fitness equipment and will offer several educational opportunities led by fitness trainers and nutritionists.

"With millions relying on food assistance, it's crucial to provide not just any food, but nutritious options," said Angela York, the Executive Director of Thrive Peninsula. "'5 for Thrive' empowers our community to build a healthier future through access to both food and wellness education."

Throughout September, community members can find a series of interactive health classes that include fitness demonstrations, nutrition workshops, cooking classes and more.

Further details on these classes can be found on Thrive Peninsula's Instagram and Facebook accounts.

The nonprofit shared a list of the items they are most focused on getting for this initiative. Food items include granola, dried fruit, brown rice, low-sodium canned vegetables, and 100% fruit juice with no added sugar.

The fitness equipment they are asking for includes basketballs, baseballs, footballs, exercise and medicine balls, jump ropes, resistance bands, dumbbells and kettlebells that weigh up to 20 pounds, and yoga mats.

You can drop off in-person donations to Thrive Peninsula's new location at 12749 Nettles Dr.
