NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — One person is dead after a two-vehicle crash on the James River Bridge Thursday night.
Virginia State Police said the call came in just after 8 p.m.
According to VSP, a Hyundai was stopped in the right traffic lane when the driver exited the car and went to the rear door to get something from the backseat. That's when a Subaru came up behind the stopped Hyundai and hit it from behind.
The male driver of the Hyundai, 58-year-old Ray Charles Spencer of Hampton, was struck and killed. The driver of the Subaru and his 15-month-old child were taken to the hospital, but they are expected to survive.
The driver of the Subaru, Evan Raycraft of Smithfield, Virginia, has been charged with reckless driving. Alcohol and speed were not factors.
The southbound lanes of the bridge were closed while VSP investigated the crash.
