NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Newport News Fire Department (NNFD) answered the call of a 2-alarm fire in the 300th block of 54th Street on Friday evening. The 911 call came in just before 5 p.m.
When crews arrived, they saw fire coming from the second and third floors of the home. NNFD had initially received reports that people were trapped inside the home. It turned out all occupants were able to escape unharmed.
The fire was brought under control within an hour of the first units arriving, and units are investigating the cause of the fire as of 7 p.m. Six residents have been displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross, NNFD said.
"Please make sure you have working smoke alarms and a home exit plan!" the fire department urged people on Facebook.
