Shots fired at Newport News Police Headquarters, $5,000 reward offered for information

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Authorities are working to track down whoever opened fire on the Newport News Police Headquarters overnight, damaging parts of the building.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Authorities are working to track down whoever opened fire on the Newport News Police Headquarters overnight, damaging parts of the building.

Dispatchers received calls of gunshots in the area of the headquarters shortly before 2:45 a.m. Tuesday morning.

"I woke up to the sound of gunfire. I thought that's what woke me up. I ran into one of my son's bedrooms and he was already at the window looking out. He said he seen somebody wearing tan running up from the police station toward northbound on Jefferson," said April Gasper.

According to our 13News Now crew at the scene, two windows were shattered in the evidence building as well as one in the records division.

Police have also reviewed the surveillance video and say it appears to be one man who fired at least four shots into the building.

Newport News Police released a statement citing the shooting:

No other details have been released at this time, but the investigation is ongoing.

Newport News Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) are offering up to a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest of the person responsible for the shooting.
