NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff, the husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, is visiting Newport News on Labor Day as part of Congressman Bobby Scott’s annual cookout.
Scott’s office confirmed the visit on Saturday morning, ending speculation about when and where Emhoff’s announced visit to Newport News would take place. Harris’ presidential campaign had announced the Newport News visit last week without giving specifics.
Harris will not join her husband at the cookout. Instead, she will be on the campaign trail in Detroit and Pittsburgh.
U.S. Senator Tim Kaine also is a guest at Scott’s cookout, which has been held almost every year since 1977, when he was running for House of Delegates. It has become for Democrats the unofficial start of the final stretch of political campaigns ahead of the November election.
The cookout is open to the public from 3 to 6 p.m. on Monday at 914 Shore Drive in Newport News. It is open to the public.
Scott promises “a fun-filled afternoon with food, conversation, and live entertainment.”
