NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A man is facing assault charges after he allegedly pushed an officer during a traffic stop and ran away.
Dominique Ulysses Montgomery, 26, was arrested on Thursday after being on the run for a day.
Police say the charges stem from an incident that happened just before 9:30 a.m. on April 25, when officers stopped Montgomery for driving without car headlights on.
Montgomery allegedly did not follow the instructions officers gave him, and got out of the car after he was asked to stay inside. Police say he then reached into the car, at which time an officer saw a gun on the floorboard.
The officer reportedly told Montgomery to place his hands behind his back as he was being handcuffed.
After questioning the officer, Montgomery allegedly placed both of his hands on the officer's chest, pushed the officer, then ran away.
Police say officers tried chasing Montgomery, while dodging traffic on Warwick Boulevard, but then lost sight of him.
Montgomery was arrested at Newport News Headquarters on Thursday. Along with assault on law enforcement and resisting arrest, he is facing charges for driving without headlights on, revoked river's license and pedestrian interfering with traffic.
