Person seriously hurt, rescued from house fire in Newport News

Newport News firefighters rescued the person who was trapped inside the home on 30th Street. The person's injuries are life-threatening.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Newport News firefighters rescued a person from a home as they fought a two-alarm house fire in the Southeast Community Wednesday morning.

The fire was at a house in the 800 block of 30th Street. That's off of Marshall Avenue. Officials say the fire started in the back of the home.

Crews could see smoke and fire coming from the home and immediately conducted a search of the house.

It was during the search that they found someone trapped and rescued the person.

The person's injuries are considered life-threatening.

One neighbor, Donald Boone, says he knew the person who was hurt in the fire. He says he's hoping for his friend to survive, saying, "You don't wish this for nobody, especially right here going into the Christmas season. You don't wish to see nobody get displaced, so it's kind of emotional."

Three people in all were living at the multi-dwelling house. Two were able to make it out safely, but everyone is displaced. Fire officials are not ruling anything out yet and are still investigating the cause of the fire.
