One dead, several hurt in accident on I-64 in Newport News

One person was killed and several others were injured in a single vehicle accident on I-64 in Newport News Sunday afternoon.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) - A 75-year-old woman was killed and several others were injured in a single vehicle accident Sunday afternoon.

According to Sgt. Michelle Anaya, who is the State Police spokesperson, this accident happened at around 5:10 p.m. on I-64 eastbound at mile marker 258, near J. Clyde Morris Blvd. when an SUV experienced a rear tire failure.

Police say the car ran off the road, struck a jersey and flipped multiple times. Six people were inside the SUV at the time of the accident. Two were ejected from the car.

First responders had to completely shut down the eastbound lanes. Nightingale was dispatched to the scene, and the westbound lanes also had to be shut down for awhile to accommodate the helo's landing zone.

Police say Wilnet Gordon, 75, was in the back seat at the time of the crash. She was ejected from the car and died at the scene.

The driver of the SUV, and all other passengers were taken to area hospitals.
