NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A man is dead and a woman is seriously injured following a shooting at a Newport News apartment, police say.
It happened at the Warwick Village Apartments on Nelson Drive, just off Warwick Boulevard.
Officers and medics responded to the scene around 2:25 p.m. That's when police found the man dead and the woman with serious injuries. She was taken to the hospital.
Investigators learned that the suspect entered a home where an argument ensued. He then fired several shots at both victims and fled the scene in the female victim's car.
Police identified the suspect as 24-year-old Lonnell Deandre Harris III. Investigators say he was arrested in Norfolk by Norfolk police officers, but was turned over to Newport News Police.
His last known address is said to be the scene of the homicide, however, it is believed he no longer lived there.
People who live in the area are shocked about this because they say it's a quiet area.
"This is a family community. Mostly it's military out here so for the record, this is not a bad neighborhood so I don't want this to turn into a bad neighborhood," said one neighbor, who watched as police investigated.
Harris is charged with one count each of murder, aggravated malicious wounding and grand larceny, as well as two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Police identified the victim as 32-year-old James Gerard White.
The female victim remains hospitalized. Police believe she recently ended a relationship with Harris.
