NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A spokesperson with Newport News Shipbuilding confirmed with 13News Now that there was no shooter Thursday morning.

Duane Bourne with Newport News Shipbuilding confirmed the area was safe and there was no shooter, after people on Twitter started saying there was a shooter on one of the Navy carriers.

A news release from Bourne states that the USS John C. Stennis heard a fragmented radio transmission for an active shooter drill. However, those on board did not know it was a drill and took quick action to lock down the carrier.

Bourne said "Other commissioned vessels at Newport News Shipbuilding also chose to lock down. We support their response and believe they took appropriate action. We expect all ships to release from lock down no later than 10 a.m."
