Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport maps out next 20 years with updated master plan

The updated plan comes after several setbacks this year, including the departure of Avelo Airlines, and the termination of the airport's executive director.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Executives with the Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport are mapping out the next 20 years. They're updating the master plan with goals to prepare the facility for future aviation demand and improve safety and sustainability.

The airport last updated its master plan in 2014; since then, officials say the aviation industry has changed significantly. The updated plan comes after several setbacks this year, including the departure of Avelo Airlines in April due to economic and market reasons, and the termination of the airport's executive director.

According to an online presentation from the airport, the plan highlights the facility's strengths, including passenger efficiency, additional garage space and location. Some weaknesses include the lack of air service, concessions, and maintenance storage. Peninsula residents who spoke with 13News Now said they are looking for more flights at a cheaper price.

“I’ve just found that Richmond is cheaper. It’s just as convenient, really," Newport News resident Linda Brooks told 13News Now. "I mean you’re going to save $100 then why not drive up to Richmond.”

“Norfolk is killing them," York County resident Michael Wilson said. "Norfolk is doubling in size and this airport is dwindling. It’s getting smaller and smaller.”

Officials are also looking for other opportunities for community engagement and to attract businesses. People can learn more about the plan during a public information meeting on Thursday. It will be at the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce — located at 11850 Merchants Walk, Suite 110, in City Center at Oyster Point — and starts at 6:30 p.m.

The session will focus on the planning process, the existing airport inventory and aviation forecasts, according to officials.

Earlier this year, the airport received a federal grant worth more than $1.3 million to develop the plan, as well as more than $800,000 to improve the runway.
