NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The President of Newport News Shipbuilding is now banned from traveling to Russia.
On Wednesday, Russia's Foreign Ministry announced 92 additions to its list of Americans banned from entering the country, including some journalists, people working for law enforcement agencies, academics, big businesses and think tanks.
The list details over 2,000 “US citizens subject to personal sanctions.” Jennifer Boykin's name is listed at number 162.
Newport News Shipbuilding is the world's only maker of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and is one of two U.S. manufacturers of nuclear-powered submarines. A spokesman for the shipyard's parent company, HII, directed 13News Now to the U.S. Department of State for any comment.
According to a ministry statement, the blacklisted individuals were placed on the list “in response to the "Russophobic course pursued by the Biden administration with the declared goal of 'inflicting a strategic defeat on Moscow.'”
Since Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the U.S. government has issued thousands of sanctions against Russian firms and their foreign suppliers.
On Aug. 23, the federal government imposed more sanctions on hundreds more Russian firms and firms across Europe, Asia and the Middle East, that have allegedly been providing products and services in support of Russia’s war effort and sanctions evasion.
As of Jun. 27, The U.S. State Department updated its Russia Travel Advisory. The advisory currently sits at Level 4 meaning “Do not travel;” the reasons cited for this level classification include terrorism, civil unrest and wrongful detention.
This also comes as the U.S. Department of Justice on Wednesday claims to have discovered and disrupted Russia’s efforts to interfere in the 2024 election, via the undermining of the Democratic presidential nominee, exploitation of social divisions, sowing distrust in democratic institutions, eroding support for Ukraine and spreading Russian propaganda.
